Types of Sleep Apnea

Obstructive sleep apnea is the most common type of sleep apnea. It happens when your airways become completely blocked or partially blocked repeatedly during sleep. During an apneic episode, the diaphragm and chest muscles work harder than usual as the pressure increase to open the airway. This can interfere with sound sleep and reduce the flow of oxygen to vital organs.
In Central sleep apnea, the airways are not locked during sleep. Instead of this, your brain fails to signal muscles to breathe because of instability in respiratory control center. Central sleep apnea is related to the function of your ‘Central nervous system’. A person with central sleep apnea generally feels that they have insomnia, but have choking or gasping sensation when they wake up.
