Neuromuscular Dentistry

Home » Neuromuscular Dentistry

Neuromuscular dentistry also known as ‘Physiologic Dentistry’, It is focused on the alignment of the jaw. If the jaw is not properly aligned, neuromuscular dentistry may help to address the precise cause of the problem — whether jaw joint, muscle or tooth position. Treatment is designed to correct bite abnormalities by allowing the jaws to go to their optimal positions for the long term.

TMJ vs. TMD

TMJ stands for our left and right temporomandibular (jaw) joints. TMD, meaning temperomandibular disorders and when we include the many symptoms of head, neck, facial and jaw pain it is recognized as “craniomandibular disorders.”

Neuromuscular dentistry relaxes the muscles around the jaw to ease up tension on the joints. This is believed to improve jaw alignment and relieve temporomandibular disorders (TMD) and malocclusion, also known as a crossbite.

Neuromuscular dentists determine the optimal position of the jaw to correct misalignment and adjust how the upper and lower teeth come together (occlusion). By realigning the jaw joint through the use of cosmetic dental restorations, tooth recontouring (equilibration) or orthodontics, dentists strive to alleviate stress from the jaw muscles and eliminate painful symptoms of TMJ or TMD.
